Top Ten Tips for a Good Night Sleep

April 25th, 2010

1. Buy a Comfortable Bed – Choosing the right bed and mattress is extremely important, as the levels of comfort and support will aid a restful night’s sleep. Try to avoid sleeping on old or small mattresses, which will neither support the back nor allow room to manoeuvre.

2. Create a Restful Environment – Your bedroom should be used mainly for either resting or sleeping, so try to avoid reading, watching television, using the computer or listening to music in bed. It is important to ensure that the temperature is comfortable, that once the curtains are closed you are in complete darkness and that it is quiet.

3. Programme Your Body – Try to make sure you go to bed and get up at around the same time each day. By maintaining regular hours you will condition your body and it will adjust to this pattern.

4. Exercise Regularly – After a hard day’s work we are often tired but sometimes this is more mental than physical and that can lead to lying in bed restlessly and unable to sleep. It is therefore important to exercise regularly, even if this is only a light run or swim in the early evening.

5. Allow Time to Digest Your Food –  Eating too much just before you go to bed is going to have a negative effect on your sleep and especially avoid certain types of difficult to digest food. Eating cheese before you go to bed won’t necessarily give you nightmares but it won’t help you get to sleep.

6. Reduce Your Caffeine Intake –  Try to avoid drinking coffee, tea, coca-cola and especially any Red Bull style drinks prior to going to sleep. It is much better to go to bed with a hot cup of cocoa or herbal tea. In fact switching to caffeine-free drinks altogether will help balance your body’s energy levels.

7. Alcohol is NOT the Answer –  Drinking a lot of alcohol can help you fall asleep at first but it will not give you a solid, restful sleep, as your morning hangover will testify. Moderation is the key, as a glass of red of wine or shot of whisky can have a relaxing effect.

8. Stop Smoking – We all know the dangers of smoking but apart from the negative impact it has on your health in general, it will also mean it takes you longer to get to sleep and often suffer from interrupted sleep.

9. Clear Your Mind – We all have worries and concerns in this hectic modern world and rather than lie in bed with your mind whirring, it’s best to try and clear your mind by writing a list of key issues or tasks that need to be addressed the next day.

10. Relax before Bed – Prepare for sleep by relaxing your body, either by taking a warm bath or shower, listening to some chilled out tunes or doing yoga or meditation. You need both a calm mind and body for a good night’s sleep.

A Quick Guide to Choosing the Right Mattress for You

April 25th, 2010

There are a wide range of different types of mattress and these can have a significant impact on price and more importantly, comfort. When you consider how long you spend in bed and how often you buy a mattress, you realise the importance of making the right choice.

Sprung mattresses are the most common form of mattress and there are open springs, continuous springs and pocket spring mattresses. There are a huge number of different types of mattress fillings, which create the cushion between you and the springs. Some use natural fibres, while others use man-made materials such as polyester. Foam mattresses are becoming ever more popular and the main types of foam in use are polyurethane, latex and viscoelastic or ‘memory’ foam as it is more commonly known.

Open springs most often feature in the lower to mid priced mattress, with rows of hourglass shaped springs providing support. Continuous springs feature in the mid to high priced mattress, with a series of interwoven soft-coils springs running up and down the bed to create a responsive feel. Pocket springs feature in the mid to high priced mattresses, with rows of individually compressed small springs offering very flexible support.

The modern fire-retardant foam used in modern mattresses provides a higher degree of comfort and support than the traditional spring mattresses. Polyurethane foams provide a good level of comfort and support, while latex is well regarded for high levels of comfort and durability. The viscoelastic or ‘memory’ foam mattresses are premium quality and offer the highest level of support by moulding its shape to the body of the sleepers.

For those wanting the best of both worlds there are foam topped mattresses, which combine a traditional spring mattress with a top layer of foam.

It is also vital to the check the bed’s fillings, especially if you suffer from allergies, as in this case it would be a good idea to choose a hypoallergenic mattress.

A Quick Guide to Choosing the Right Bed for You

April 25th, 2010

It is very important to consider all the factors when buying a bed, as it is without doubt one of the most difficult pieces of furniture to choose. Not only does it have to look stylish but it has to be comfortable,  as it is that comfort and support that gives you a good night’s sleep and lets you wake up in the morning feeling fresh and ready to go.

Experts recommend purchasing a new bed every eight to ten years, so if your bed is over ten years old, now is the time for change. In fact, the average person spends over a third of their lives in bed, so making the right decision is essential.

There are a huge range of choices when it comes to beds; including size, price, and style, accompanying headboards, mattress type and even pillows.

When a comes to size, a bigger bed helps reduce back pain and aids sleep, as the extra room allows partners to find the most comfortable position without disturbing each another. Make sure you check the width of the bed, as a standard double bed is only 135cm (4ft 6 in) wide. The length of the bed is important too and ideally it must be at least 10-15cm (4-6in) longer than the tallest person planning to sleep in the bed. Height is another factor that should be considered, as getting in and out of the bed needs to be simple. If you have difficulties then an adjustable bed could be right the option for you.

Prices of the beds can vary dramatically but generally speaking the more you spend on a bed, the more comfortable and durable you can expect it to be. Remember a bed is a long-term investment and will probably last over ten years, so it can be worthwhile spending that little bit extra.

Beds also come in a vast array of styles to suit any home. These can be classic four-poster beds, canopy beds, and contemporary platform beds and can have wooden, metal or even leather finishes. The choice of headboard is another element that influences the style of your bed. With a bit of research you can find a bed that will complement your decor or even be the centre piece of you room.

Mattresses have a huge impact on comfort and again there are many different choices. Some people prefer soft mattresses and others hard. Springs are often considered the hear t of a mattress but the modern choice is often foam, which adapts to the shape of your body. The same is true of pillows, with latex pillows designed to keep the neck in alignment with the rest of the spine.
